Dear Mom,

This has been a hard year for you-maybe one of the hardest...
Once again you have demonstrated a strength that mostly goes unnoticed. That is -accepting the unbearable reality that you need help with just about everything.
You have been pretty fiercely independent all your life- managing your demanding husband with skill, facing your tasks as as mother with rock hard determination after your stroke, etc..etc...And now, in these final years, letting go of this fierce independence seems to be the hardest thing of all. We will all be in your shoes one day- so you are forging a path for your children and grandchildren. Now as for Dad...well, he went out with a bang like he did most things in his life.
But you, Mom, are here... day after day- present for graduations, marriages, phone calls, and all of the ups and downs of the family. Hell of a staying power you have.
Now this is not to say that the angry side of you does not flare up now and again-but its always followed by remorse and gratitude-the silver lining.. Mostly during these tough days you, as always, set yourself to your tasks with quiet determination and move through your day. And, as Maggie says, "you have this indomitable zest for life" which I hope and pray all of the grandchildren inherit. Interest and striving to improve your mind, your art... unstoppable...

Thank you Katie for giving us all this opportunity to celebrate our Matriarch.

Love Stella.
